Earthquake live monitor
Live dataEvery earthquake below is a confirmed report from a seismic monitoring agency. Prakruti reconciles solutions from USGS, EMSC and GFZ GEOFON into one record per earthquake while keeping each agency's own measurement intact. This page shows observations only — no forecasts and no research output.

Reading these numbers
Magnitude is not intensity
Magnitude measures the size of the earthquake at its source — one number for the whole event. Intensity describes how strongly the ground shook at a particular place, and so differs from street to street. A deep M6 can be barely felt; a shallow M5 directly beneath a town can be damaging.
Why the scale is spelled out
Prakruti prints the scale beside every value — mww, mb, ml and others. These are different measurements, not interchangeable readings of one “Richter scale”. Moment magnitude (Mw) is preferred for larger earthquakes because the older scales saturate and understate them.
Early solutions get revised
The first automatic solution appears within a minute or two and is often adjusted once an analyst reviews it. Prakruti keeps the revision, records which agency reviewed it, and shows whether a solution is preliminary or reviewed on each event page.
Counts depend on the network
More small earthquakes are detected where instruments are dense. A rise in the count for a region can reflect better detection rather than more seismicity, which is why historical comparisons need care.
