Data sources & transparency

Prakruti holds no data of its own. Everything it shows comes from a public agency, under that agency's terms, and this page states exactly which — including the sources it cannot reach and the ones it has not yet built.

Geographic coverage
North Atlantic, eastern North Pacific and central North Pacific basins

Licence: US Government public domain (17 U.S.C. §105)

Redistribution: Public domain. NHC asks that redistributed advisories are not altered and are attributed to NHC.

Request policy: NHC asks automated clients to poll no more often than once every few minutes. Prakruti polls CurrentStorms.json at 10-minute intervals and only re-fetches an advisory when its advisory number changes.

EMSC / SeismicPortal FDSN event service

European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre

Update frequency
Near real time; rapid automatic solutions are revised within hours

Geographic coverage
Global, with densest coverage across Europe and the Mediterranean
Archive offered by the agency
from 1998-01-01
Held locally
2026-09-18 → 2026-10-27
Access method
fdsnws
Authentication
none required

Licence: Open access for non-commercial and research use; see EMSC terms

Redistribution: EMSC permits reuse with attribution. Prakruti displays EMSC solutions with the EMSC credit line and links back to the source event page.

Request policy: SeismicPortal asks clients to keep request rates modest and to prefer the bulk/window endpoints over per-event polling.

Archive offered by the agency

Access method
fdsnws
Authentication

Licence: CC BY 4.0 for GEOFON-produced solutions

Redistribution: Reuse permitted with attribution under CC BY 4.0.

Request policy: Standard FDSN service. Prakruti requests windowed text responses rather than polling per event.

Earthquake solutions from the GEOFON programme, GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences.

GEOFON implements the FDSN "text" and "xml" formats; it returns HTTP 400 for format=json, so Prakruti parses the pipe-delimited text response.

Licence: US Government public domain (17 U.S.C. §105); some contributed data carry other terms

Redistribution: Public domain for USGS-produced content. Contributed network solutions may carry separate terms; the contributing network is preserved on every record.

Request policy: No published hard limit. USGS asks that clients avoid large repeated queries; Prakruti paginates historical pulls in month-sized windows and caps each request at 20,000 events.

Styron, R. and Pagani, M. (2020), The GEM Global Active Faults Database, Earthquake Spectra.

Fault traces are mapped observations. Slip rates attached to them are inferred, frequently absent, and carry wide uncertainty.

Sources investigated but not ingested

Documented so that missing coverage is visible rather than invisible

Data unavailable

Australian Bureau of Meteorology tropical cyclone products

Australian Bureau of Meteorology

Not ingested

Not yet ingested. Planned for the cyclone backfill phase to give the Australian region and South Pacific an official source, alongside JMA for the Western Pacific.

Licence: CC BY 4.0 for most BoM products

IBTrACS — International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship

NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information

Not ingested

Verified reachable 21 September 2026 (the last-3-years CSV is 8.2 MB, the full archive considerably larger). This is the source for historical storm tracks and climatology. Ingestion is scheduled for the cyclone backfill phase, which needs the resumable chunked loader rather than a single download.

Licence: US Government public domain; constituent agency data carry their own terms

India Meteorological Department / RSMC New Delhi

India Meteorological Department

Not ingested

Reachable (HTTP 200) but published as HTML bulletins and PDF/GIS products rather than a structured feed. Prakruti links to RSMC New Delhi bulletins as the authority for the North Indian Ocean and does not reproduce their content.

Licence: Government of India; terms not stated as an open licence

Joint Typhoon Warning Center

US Navy / Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Center

Not ingested

Verified 21 September 2026: metoc.navy.mil returns HTTP 403 to this platform. JTWC data is public domain, but the server refuses automated clients and Prakruti will not attempt to bypass that. Western Pacific and Southern Hemisphere coverage therefore relies on JMA and BoM instead.

International Seismological Centre Bulletin

International Seismological Centre

Not ingested

Not yet ingested. The ISC reviewed Bulletin is the authoritative long-term global catalogue and is the right source for research-grade historical analysis, but it lags real time by about two years and its bulk service is the correct access route rather than repeated FDSN queries. Planned for the historical backfill phase.

Licence: CC BY 4.0 for the ISC Bulletin; some contributed data carry other terms

National Centre for Seismology, India

Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India

Not ingested

Not yet ingested. NCS publishes event lists through a web interface rather than a documented API, and its redistribution terms are not stated. Indian subcontinent events are currently covered through USGS and EMSC, both of which report them.

Imagery

Live data

Imagery courtesy of NASA Worldview / GIBS, part of the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS).

GIBS tiles are requested from NASA when a visitor opens the map and are not copied or re-hosted by Prakruti. NASA asks that clients avoid mirroring the archive, which runs to petabytes.

Planetary and lunar positions are computed locally from the VSOP87 planetary theory and a truncated lunar theory, via the open-source astronomy-engine library. No astronomical coordinates are fetched from a third party, and none are invented.
